Karamoja (1954)

Picture
Given by his physician only six months to live, dentist William B. Treutle of Tacoma, Washington did what anyone might do under such dire circumstances: he sold his practice and...got married! For their honeymoon, the newlyweds traveled to a remote region of Uganda with a 16mm camera to film the activities of the Karamoja, a singular tribe of people whose strange and at times unappetizing customs were certain to translate into boffo box office back home. Treutle, who had been misdiagnosed and was actually quite healthy, paid for his expedition by selling the footage to "America's Fearless Showman" Kroger Babb. The latter paired it with Robert (Anais Nin Observed) Snyder's grim documentary Half-Way To Hell about the rise of fascism in Germany, which included graphic atrocity footage from Hitler's concentration camps. Did anyone visit the concession stand during this engagement?

The sole directing credit of Venice-born Umberto Bonsignori, the 1961 Maeva is the story of a young and beautiful Tahitian woman (Tumata Teuiau) who leaves her small fishing village to become a painter's model but is soon disillusioned by the insincerity of her European lovers. The script and narration were written by avant-garde filmmaker Maya Deren (Meshes of the Afternoon), whose then-husband, Teiji Ito, composed Maeva's unusual score. The film is apparently lost but Ito's soundtrack is still available. Also known as Pagan Hellcat, True Diary of a Wahine, and other titles tailored for grindhouse marquees.

The Sin of Adam and Eve (1969)

Mexican producer/director Miguel Zacariás (The Bees) profitably exploited Creationism with his 1969 nudie version of original sin, which was such a hit that he sought biblical box office four more times. His Adam is prolific beefcake actor Jorge Rivero, who appeared in everything from lucha libra epics to Howard Hawks' Rio Lobo. Trouble-making Eve is comely Candy Wilson ("Kandy" in the credits), whose career apparently began and ended here. Rivero reprised his role in Zacariás final film, 1986's La vida de nuestro señor Jesucristo, which featured Claudio Brook from Luis Bunuel films as Jesus.

Picture
Forcibly ejected from the asylum where he's spent three years for slapping a customer with a slab of meat, a Viennese butcher (rotund Victor Buono from Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte) uses his grinder to turn enemies into sausages in Lo strangolatore di Vienna, a gore-free Italian/German horror comedy from 1971. Brad Harris (The Fury of Hercules) is a newspaper reporter sniffing around the butcher shop, while Karin Field from Radley Metzger's The Alley Cats is Buono's bosomy neighbor. It was co-written by Dick Pieces Randall, who also plays a cop and later produced director Guido Zurli's Ajita Wilson clunker Black Deep Throat. Zurli's Buono bologna was later distributed in the U.S. as Meat Is Meat and The Mad Butcher by Harry Novak's Boxoffice International.

New from Denmark? Hah! Sicko cinema specialist and GIMP Hall of Fame honoree Lee Frost (Love Camp 7) directed this 1972 doozy without ever leaving Los Angeles. The twisted tale follows a deep-pocketed degenerate (Ray Sebastian from Byron Mabe's The Head Mistress) who kidnaps women, imprisons them in his foul basement dungeon, and forces them to perform sex shows for an audience of wealthy perverts. It was the final of three fake Danish Frost films, preceded by 1969's The Captives and the 1970 Ride Hard, Ride Wild, all financed by future porn producer Armand Atamian. All three were filmed silent with post-production audio so they'd appear to be dubbed. With Sandy Teen-Age Jail Bait Dempsey and Annette Michael from Psyched by the 4D Witch as the unnamed reprobate's prey; and Roger Gentry from Sleazy Rider and character actor Marland Proctor (Psycho From Texas) as debauched deviates who pay to watch.

Picture
The 1957 docu-drama Paradiso Terrestre, the result of expeditions into four continents to uncover for the camera the rituals of love, from penguin courtship in the Antarctic to a fertility ritual with "sacred love oil" in the Cameroons to displays of shark-fighting machismo in Tahiti, was co-directed by Luciano Emmer (1950's Sunday in August with Marcello Mastrionni) and first-time feature film director Robert Enrico, later known for his award-winning adaptation of Ambrose Bierce's "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge." The U.S. version, retitled by Pacemaker Pictures, was narrated by George Bryan, who had done the same for the 1955 Italian documentary about Southeast Asia, Lost Continent.

Harry Novak's Boxoffice International backed Peter Honeymoon of Terror Perry's 1970 foray into historical fiction with a dark-skinned Cleopatra, lovely Loray White, amid a sea of Novak soft porn regulars such as Johnny Rocco (Tobacco Roody), Jay Edwards from The Secret Sex Lives of Romeo and Juliet, Dixie Donovan (The Joys of Jezebel), John Vincent from The Exotic Dreams of Casanova, and others. Also with Tommy Davis (Cain's Cutthroats) and Frank Cuva from the Gary Graver oddity Wild, Free & Hungry. Former dancer White, purportedly once conned into a brief marriage to Sammy Davis, Jr. after the singer had been ordered by Columbia Pictures' Harry Cohn to drop his plan to wed Kim Novak and hastily marry a black woman or risk mob retaliation, also appeared in H.G. Lewis' sorry Miss Nymphet's Zap-In (1970).

Sande N. Johnsen's (Teenage Gang Debs) contribution to the "crazed artist" genre, The Beautiful, The Bloody and the Bare (1964), follows a figure painter and his wife who encourage their globe-trotting photographer pal and roomie Pete (Jack Lowe from The Girl With the Magic Box) to try his hand at snapping nude models. And snap Pete does, whenever he sees a woman wearing (or bleeding) the color red. Tom Signorelli from Alice, Sweet Alice is the painter who unwittingly provides psycho Pete with his victims, while Rickey Bell (Olga's Girls) and Marlene Denes from Pandora and the Magic Box are two of the psycho shutterbug's ill-fated figure models.

Picture
Originally shown as Marilyn, British director Wolf Village of the Damned Rilla's 1953 drama about an unfaithful wife and her mechanic lover leans heavily into James M. Cain territory by way of Visconti's 1943 Ossessione. It stars Sandra Dorne (later of 1964's creepy Devil Doll) as the title temptress and Maxwell Reed (Picture Mommy Dead) as hapless gearhead Tom, while Leslie Dwyer from Die, Monster, Die! is George Saunders, the persnickety patriarch destined for death. Also with Ferdy Mayne from The Fearless Vampire Killers as a slick seducer who competes for Marilyn's affections. Distributed in the U.S. by Astor Pictures, which handled everything from Michelangelo Antonioni's Il Grido to Cat Women of the Moon.

Sexual Communication (1971)

Picture
Portraying an analyst specializing in human sexuality, Dr. Sheila Rossi (aka porn star Heather Starr from Bob Chinn's Teacher's Pets) introduces and serves as guide for this 1971 white coater from someone listed as Albert Irving. This mystery director is credited with only one other feature, the swingers' saga Januarius from the same year. The "Dr. Rossi" character had previously appeared in Masters Degree In Feminine Sexual Liberation earlier that year, and would return for 1974's Marital Aids. Though Sexual Communication is currently unavailable, it's a safe bet that the "George Martin" in the credits isn't the Beatles' arranger.
